He epitomized the lean, true-hearted American, slow of speech but capable of outdoing the "bad guys". His films include Lives of a Bengal Lancer 1935, Mr Deeds Goes to Town 1936, Sergeant York 1940 (Academy Award), and High Noon 1952 (Academy Award). In 1960 he received a special Academy Award for his lifetime contribution to cinema.
